For today's article I'm going to be covering why I think that the idea the flood of Genesis 6 being local instead of global is a preposterous assertion. To this end I am going to be listing several reasons why I think that this is the case. Shall we begin?
1. One reason as to why I think the genesis flood wasn't just a local one is because you won't find any scriptural backing for this position. Instead the only reason people believe the flood was local is because they commit the logical fallacy of appealing to authority, that is, they believe Scientists when they tell them the earth is billions of years old. Which is an assumption that arises when interpreting the evidences based on a uniformitarian view of the past (the present is the key to the past view). A global flood will throw a wrench in this gear of thinking. It turns out that there are MANY scriptures one can look at to see that the flood was in fact a global event. I am going to quote some scriptures just to show my point. I am also going to underline certain parts of verses also to make it clear that it was a global flood.
2. Gen 6:13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
3. Gen 7:4 For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.
4. Gen 7:19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered.
Gen 7:20 Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered.
Gen 7:21 And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man:
Gen 7:22 All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died.
Gen 7:23 And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.
5. Gen 9:11 And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.
Gen 9:12 And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:
Gen 9:13 I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.
Gen 9:14 And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud:
Gen 9:15 And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.
Gen 9:16 And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.
Gen 9:17 And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.
6. 2Pe 3:3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
2Pe 3:4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
2Pe 3:5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
2Pe 3:6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
2Pe 3:7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
Further Questions If the Flood was just Local
7. Why build an ark in the first place if the flood was local? Why didn't God just tell Noah to move? He had like a hundred years.
8. Why bring all the animals on the ark? A local flood wouldn't have caused them to go extinct.
9. Would a local flood really wiped out every wicked person that was on the earth?
10. If the Flood of Genesis was just local, wouldn't the rainbow be a sign that God is a liar since he has broken his covenant, since there are local floods nowadays all the time?
In conclusion I believe that I have just demonstrated that the text plainly shows that the flood of Noah's day had to be in fact a global one, and I also believe the questions that I posed here are some of the biggest challenges for one who hold a view that the flood of Noah was local.
